Inside Extraordinary Minds: A Journey Through Neurodiversity
Seniors / Tuesday 12:45pm - 2:45pm
Exploring the brain, celebrating diversity
This literacy-rich science and identity unit invites students to explore the concept of neurodiversity, celebrating different ways people think, learn, and experience the world. Each week, students investigate a part of the brain and link it to a form of neurodivergence (such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and synaesthesia). Through scientific understanding, personal storytelling, profiles of historical figures, and expressive media, students build empathy and curiosity about how diverse minds shape society. By the end of the course, students will create a “Neurodivergent Brain Atlas” and present their work at an inspiring “Expo of Minds” celebration.
The Forgotten Sensorium – Animals, Symbiosis, and Strange Senses
Middlers / Wednesday 12:45pm - 2:45pm
Discover hidden senses and extraordinary partnerships in the natural world.
This STEAM-based unit invites students to uncover the fascinating world of animal senses and symbiotic relationships. From electroreception and magnetoreception to echolocation and scent trails, students explore how animals perceive the world in ways humans cannot. Lessons also delve into the remarkable co-dependence between animals, plants, and fungi, revealing hidden networks of survival and communication. Blending biology, technology, data gathering, and creative expression, students will design sensory habitats, invent fictional organisms grounded in real science, and build interactive exhibits. The unit culminates in a science gallery or pop-up museum where students present their sensory creations through models, storytelling, and hands-on experiences.
Wired for Wonder: Signals, Senses, and You!
Juniors / Thursday 12:45pm - 2:45pm
Explore how your brain, body, and senses connect to shape who you are 🧠
This hands-on unit introduces students to the fascinating world of the nervous system. Through models, sensory stations, games, and simple anatomy studies, students learn how the brain, spinal cord, and nerves work together to control the body. Each lesson blends science and art, encouraging body awareness, empathy, and curiosity about how our minds function. Students investigate voluntary and involuntary actions, emotions, memory, and intelligence, while also learning how to keep the nervous system healthy. The course culminates in a lively Brain and Body Expo, where students present their models, writing, and interactive games to share their discoveries with others.
